From imprisonment to inclusion: life after prison

 

The Démosthène Association and the International Human Rights Institute for Peace are pleased to invite you to a symposium organized on February 3, 2012 at the University of Caen, amphitheatre Oresme, Law Department, from 9 to 17, on the theme of the rehabilitation of former convicts, entitled “from imprisonment to inclusion: life after prison”.

 

The goal of the symposium is to study and analyse the stakes and the complex conditions of this fundamental issue. Its success partly depends on the prevention of crime.

 

The current policy does not provide any “framework” organization at the national level for the essential step of the former convicts’ coming back to the social community. As such, the complexity of the former convicts’ situation is based on economic, social and psychological obstacles, which often lead to exclusion and precariousness, and therefore, they are more likely to commit a second offence.

 

These themes, their analyses and the proposals that have emerged, will be suggested during the event by multidisciplinary experts on the field.

As part of the 18th Edition of the national days of prison, the Institute organizes in partnership with the Démosthène non-profit, an exceptional evening on Saturday November 26 at IRTS in Hérouville Saint-Clair.

 

“Prison: between words and walls. Unspoken words”

 

This evening debate will focus on the French inmates’ imprisonment conditions. How life is in prison and the relationships with the outside world are some of the questions that are often raised. For instance, the movie “le déménagement” by Catherine Réchard has some difficulties to be broadcasted on national TV channels.

 

The following persons will be present at IRTS to discuss “the French prison system” with the attendees:

- Anne-Marie Fixot, President of the Démosthène non-profit

- Annick Le Roux from the national association of prison visitors

- Brigitte Patient et Hélène Castel, actresses of “Femmes de Parloir”

- Catherine Réchard, movie director of "Déménagement"

 

As an illustration of the different speaker’s talks, the  audience will attend the play “Femmes de parloir”, which was created and interpreted by Brigitte Patient and Hélène Castel and directed by Maxime Paz. A movie screening of “Le déménagement” is also planned. Both are questioning the “French prison system”.

 

The imprisonment conditions showed in the movie tend to limit social relationships within inmates for safety reasons and accordingly, lead to an isolation feeling that settles in deeply. The play is pointing out inmates’ rehabilitation policy “that tends to get more difficult in France according to several experts”. French prisons which are already overcrowded, have to welcome many more inmates, as a consequence of the government’s repressive policy.

 

This worrying French situation was decried by the European Court of Human Rights which just condemned (again) France…
